What Is the Wato Movement and Why Are Women Loving It?

Reading time: 5 minutes

There is a moment that happens in almost every Wato Movement session. It usually comes somewhere between the warm-up and the point where everyone has fully let go. A woman looks up, slightly breathless, and realises; I didn’t think about a single thing for the last forty minutes.

Not her to-do list. Not her inbox. Not the thing she said in that meeting last Tuesday. Just her body, the music, and the women moving beside her. That moment is what Wato Movement is about. But let’s start from the beginning.

What Is the Wato Movement and Why Are Women Loving It?

So, What Exactly Is Wato Movement?

Wato Movement is a movement-led wellness programme created by Rianne Lelia Bateeze, founder of Wellness With Her Club; built at the intersection of dance, body awareness, community, and healing

The name Wato carries a double meaning that holds the entire philosophy of the programme inside it. In Lusoga and Luganda, two of Uganda’s most widely spoken languages; wato means waist.

The waist is the body’s centre of gravity, its axis of movement, the place where rhythm begins and energy flows. It is also, as many women who’ve come through our sessions will tell you with a knowing smile, where we hold the most. Tension. History. Trauma. Power.

In the language of Wellness With Her Club, WATO also stands for Wellness Aiding Total Ownership; the belief that true wellness is not something done to you, but something you step into fully. That every woman has the right and the capacity to own her health, her body, and her energy, completely.

Many meanings. One movement. All true.

Each session weaves together dance-based cardio, waist-led movement, coordination drills, stretching, and cool-down practices which are all guided by trainers who bring energy, skill, and genuine joy to every class. The result is something that feels less like a workout and more like coming home to your body.

Wato Movement was born from three deep roots: dance, wellness and healing, and community and sisterhood. It was never designed to be just another fitness class. It was designed to be a space where women could reconnect; with their bodies, with each other, and with the parts of themselves that get buried under the weight of everyday life.

Why Movement? Why Dance?

We carry everything in our bodies. Stress, grief, joy, memory, tension... it all lives somewhere in the tissue, the hips, the shoulders, the chest. And one of the most powerful ways to move through it; literally, is to move. Dance in particular has been used across African cultures for centuries as a form of expression, healing, and community. It is not new. What is new is bringing it intentionally into the context of modern women’s wellness and watching what happens when you do.

What happens, it turns out, is remarkable.

What Women Are Actually Saying?

We asked the women who show up to Wato Movement sessions what they love most. Here is what they told us, in their own words:

“Learning to be confident with my body and move it.”
“The stretching sessions after. The confidence and flexibility of my body after the session.”

“Getting to leave knowing an entire dance routine.. and all with different dance moves!”

“Discovering that my body just needs my mindfulness as much as I need it at its best.”

“Releasing that trauma because it’s stored in the hips.”

“The coordination of the trainers, they make it so fun and look so easy.”

“The community we get to be part of.”

“The infectious positive energy.”

“Looking forward to community.”

“Each space is a new observation.”

Read those again slowly. These are not just compliments about a fitness class. These are women describing skill-building, body confidence, trauma release, mindfulness, community belonging, and personal transformation all from showing up and moving together.

That is the Wato Movement difference.

What Actually Happens in a Session?

Every Wato Movement session is a full experience.

Here is what you can expect:

The warm-up: Gentle movement to ease the body in, prepare the joints, and begin shifting the energy from wherever you arrived from.

The main class: dance-based cardio and waist-led movement that builds coordination, raises your heart rate, and... let’s be honest, makes you forget you’re exercising. The routines are taught step by step, so by the end of the session you leave knowing an entire choreography. That feeling of accomplishment is intentional.

The cool-down and stretch: This is where the magic often deepens. Slow, intentional stretching that releases the body, brings the nervous system back down, and creates space for reflection. Many women describe this as their favourite part.

The community: Before, during, and after every session, there is connection. Laughter. Recognition. The feeling of being in a room full of women who showed up for themselves...and for each other.

It Is More Than Exercise

Something we hear often at Wellness With Her Club is that Wato Movement gives women permission.

Permission to take up space. Permission to be in their bodies without judgment. Permission to be a beginner, to be awkward, to be joyful, to be tired, and to keep going anyway.

In a world that constantly asks women to be smaller, quieter, more contained; Wato Movement says the opposite. Move fully. Feel fully. Be fully you.

The skill-building is real. The physical benefits are real. But the deeper gift is the relationship women begin to build with their own bodies; one session at a time.

Who Is Wato Movement For?

Wato Movement is for any woman who wants to feel better in her body; regardless of fitness level, dance experience, age, or what she thinks she looks like when she moves.

It is for the woman who hasn’t moved her body intentionally in months and doesn’t know where to start. It is for the woman who used to dance and misses how it made her feel.

It is for the woman who carries stress in her shoulders and tension in her hips and is quietly exhausted by the weight of it all. And it is for the woman who simply wants to be part of something; a community of women moving together, showing up together, growing together.

Each space is a new observation.

One of our participants said that, and we haven’t stopped thinking about it since. Every session is a new layer. A new discovery. A new version of yourself meeting you on the dance floor.
